For developers
Help build the Bring your own AI movement.
Untethered Calories is going open. After the app launches, its code moves to GitHub, under the Untethered Citizens organization, for anyone to read, build and improve.
The code goes public after the App Store launch. Follow the organization to see it arrive.
Ways to join in
Bring your skills, too.
Contribute
Fix a bug, polish a screen or build a feature. Start with an issue so we can agree on the idea, then send a pull request.
Report bugs and ideas
Found something broken, or know how it could be better? GitHub issues are the place, and you don’t need to write code to open one.
Build it yourself
Prefer your own build to the App Store? Open the project in Xcode and run it on your iPhone with your own AI key.
Your own build
Install it from the source.
You’ll need a Mac with Xcode and an iPhone on iOS 26 or later. Clone the repository, open the project, choose your iPhone and press Run. Your AI key goes in Settings, just like the App Store version.
A free Apple account is enough, but Apple makes apps installed that way expire after seven days, so you run them from Xcode again each week. A paid Apple Developer account lasts a year.
- Mac with XcodeFree from the Mac App Store.
- iPhone on iOS 26 or laterWith Developer Mode turned on, which iOS offers after the first run.
- Your own AI keyThe same Anthropic key as in the tutorial. Nothing else to set up: there’s no server.
Building your own app?
Let your users bring their own AI.
The pattern is simple: the user pastes their own key, the app keeps it in the device’s secure storage, and calls the AI company directly. No server to run, no subscription to charge, no one else’s data on your hands. It works with any AI company that sells pay-as-you-go keys. Read the code to see one way to do it, and spread the idea.
