Privacy policy
Your food log stays on your iPhone.
The app collects nothing: no account, no server, no tracking. This website counts visits with Google Analytics, but only if you say yes.
Last updated 11 October 2026
- No account, no serverWe never receive your food log, weight, photos or AI key.
- Your AI, your termsWhat you log, and any earlier days the AI looks up, goes straight from your iPhone to the AI company whose key you use.
- Website stats only with your OKGoogle Analytics loads only after you choose Allow. You can change your mind any time.
The app
Untethered Calories has no account and no server of ours. Its App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected, and this section explains what that means in practice.
What stays on your iPhone
- Your log: meals, daily totals, targets, weights, usual meals and settings are saved in the app on your iPhone. They aren’t synced anywhere.
- Older days: older meal details are condensed into daily totals. You can choose how long daily totals are kept, and the app always asks before deleting old ones.
- Your conversation: the Log screen’s recent messages are kept on your iPhone for 7 days by default (you can choose 1 to 30 in Settings), then deleted.
- Your AI key: kept in this iPhone’s Keychain, set so it isn’t synced to iCloud or restored to another phone. The app only ever shows its first and last few characters.
- Usage and cost: the app counts the tokens each reply uses so it can estimate your cost. It stores the counts, never the text.
Like any app’s data, your log can be included in your iPhone’s own backups to iCloud or a computer, which Apple and you control.
What goes to your AI company
When you log food, the app sends your message, and any photos you add, directly to Anthropic using your own AI key. Each request also carries the recent back-and-forth of the conversation you’re in, so the AI can follow along, but never your full history. With them go the numbers the AI needs to answer: the date and time, your targets, today’s totals and your usual meals. Nothing passes through us.
- Earlier days: when you ask about an earlier day or a trend, the AI can ask the app for the days it needs: their meals, daily totals, targets and weight. Only those days are sent, and only when the AI asks.
- Photos are shrunk and re-encoded first, which removes their location and other hidden details. They’re never saved: they live in memory only while you’re logging.
- Because the key is yours, Anthropic handles these requests under your agreement with them. Read Anthropic’s privacy policy (opens in a new tab) to see how they treat API data.
- The list of models: the app also uses your key to fetch Anthropic’s list of available models. No food or personal data goes with that request.
Apple Health
If you connect Apple Health, the app reads your weight and saves weights you add in the app to Health. It asks for weight only, and only when you tap Connect. The app copies your weights into its own daily records, so when the AI looks up earlier days (see above), the weight for those days is sent to Anthropic along with them. Your Health data goes nowhere else. You can turn access off at any time in iOS Settings.
Reminders
The optional daily reminder is scheduled on your iPhone. No server is involved.
Your choices
- Export: Settings → Export data saves everything as spreadsheet files (CSV).
- Delete: swipe to delete any entry, or delete the app to remove all of its data from your iPhone.
- Your key: to be sure a key can’t be used again, delete it on Anthropic’s API keys page as well.
This website
The site has no forms, accounts or ads.
Google Analytics, only if you allow it
On your first visit, a small bar asks whether you’ll allow anonymous visit statistics. Until you choose Allow, no analytics code runs and no cookies are set.
If you allow it, Google Analytics sets cookies and tells us which pages were visited, how visitors arrived (such as a search or a shared link), roughly where they are (country or city) and what kind of device and browser they used. It doesn’t tell us who you are, Google Analytics doesn’t store your IP address, and we don’t use its advertising features. Google keeps this data for two months. Google’s handling is described in its privacy policy (opens in a new tab) and how Google uses information from sites that use its services (opens in a new tab).
Your choice is remembered in your browser. To change it, use Cookie settings at the bottom of any page.
Hosting
Like every website, our web host receives the standard information your browser sends to load a page, such as your IP address and browser type, and may keep it briefly in server logs for security.
Children
The app and site aren’t aimed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. If the app ever starts collecting data, its App Store privacy label will change too.
